Twitter lists add a new twist
So I’ve been trying to get better at keeping up with Twitter. Even though the fact that my poor little Blackberry Pearl does not make it very easy for me to stay connected whilst I’m away from my work desk. I’m trying.
But I’ve found that because I’m not constantly connected, I’m missing out on so much. For a while, I was more concerned with my own tweets than with reading what others were writing. There was just too much.
Then I discovered Twitter Lists. Here’s what they do for me:
They create grouped tweet streams of the people who are on my specific lists. So, what I do, is organize my tweeps into groups. Right now, I have grouped people into the following:
- News, politics and more
- Celebrities and people who make me laugh
- Colleagues
- Friends
- Social Media people
- Healthcare industry
- Ag industry
- Higher education industry
- Milwaukee People

So now, when I log into Twitter, and I want to know what’s new with my colleagues, I click on their list and get a stream of just my colleagues’ info. When I want an update on the news, I click on that link. When I want to know what the buzz is with people from Milwaukee, Voilà! And so on…
Here’s how you can take lists to another level:
Let’s say you’re someone who’s planning to move to the Milwaukee area and you also are new to Twitter and want to learn more about social media marketing. If you notice that someone (like me) has a list with “Milwaukee People” and “Social Media Marketing”, you can choose to follow my list! What’s great is you don’t have to go through and follow each person on each list individually. You can just add my list to your lists. So, basically, I’ve done all the work for you!
So, it seems that the new goal now on Twitter is to “Get Listed” on people’s lists so that your name gets out there – which will hopefully get you more followers. That is, if you want more followers…
